Artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming banking. But what does that mean for us in Central Africa, in CEMAC? Here is a brief overview with simple examples.
Such a long weekend
This year I made many good resolutions. I plan the following week during the weekend. I call my banker, Jean Capist, to check my balance, but it is already Friday evening and he has left the office. Always helpful, he promises to handle it on Monday morning. What a long weekend—all because I do not use the chatbot kindly provided by my bank.
What value does AI add to banking?
1. Anticipating fraud
Moussa uses his card at a POS terminal or withdraws money in N'Djamena. Five minutes later, an ATM withdrawal appears in Europe.
AI can detect this inconsistency in real time and automatically block the transaction. The result is less fraud and more trust.
2. Banking available around the clock
I no longer need to wait for Jean Capist on Monday morning.
With intelligent chatbots, Fatima can check her balance or transfer money at midnight. Djim can request a mini-statement through WhatsApp.
This is a quiet revolution where branches may be far away. Ngaro in Moissala no longer worries about managing his business: his bank account is at his fingertips.
3. Lending without a banking history
In CEMAC, a growing focus for fintechs, many people lack a traditional banking record.
AI can analyse Mobile Money habits, regular payments and financial behaviour to suggest an appropriate microloan.
A fabric seller at Dembé market, for example, can obtain credit based on her Mobile Money flows.
4. A major driver of financial inclusion
In Chad, Cameroon, Gabon and other CEMAC countries, AI can:
• reach unbanked populations;
• strengthen Mobile Money solutions such as KONOOM Money;
• reduce financial-service costs.
The result is banking better aligned with local realities.
But we must keep our feet on the ground. Challenges remain:
• Data protection.
• Infrastructure gaps.
• Appropriate regulation from BEAC and COBAC.
• Limited local AI skills.
Closing thoughts
AI can make CEMAC banks more efficient, inclusive and intelligent.
Do you see AI as an opportunity or a risk for African banks?
